Continuous Professional Development

Continuous professional development (CPD) is how professionals maintain and evolve their skills, knowledge, experience and understanding. CPD requires employees to consciously and proactively action, track, document and reflect on activities that make them better at what they do. Essential to be masters of their craft.

It has become more important now than ever before that Education, Training and Development / Learning and Development practitioners in South Africa apply the principles of CPD.

As development practitioners we are responsible for the growth and development of others. To this end, we are obliged

to ensure the context in which we coordinate, facilitate, assess and moderate is relevant to our stakeholder changes and landscape.

When we qualified and registered and became formal practitioners, we agreed to a code of ethics which regulates our role. We need to uphold the professionalism of our practices to ensure the standards of delivery, and learner support is impeccable.

CPD is based on the following principles:

  • An understanding among practitioners of the importance of continued professional development in the promotion of ETD professionalism in South Africa.

  • There is an ethical obligation on ETD practitioners to regularly enhance their professional competence through CPD, as stated in the ETQA Code of Ethics of SETAs and QCTO.

  • CPD should complement and update, but not replace, knowledge and skills gained through initial education in ETD practices.

  • CPD is based on the International Best Practice and Competency Models.

  • CPD is based on various forms of learning, including formal and non-formal activities, covering theory, practical, workplace or actual demonstrated abilities.

Hornbee has launched a CPD webinar series for ETD Practitioners. Running through the month of June we will be hosting Saturday Winter Webinars, designed to bring the latest updates and insights to the ETD practices for each of the ETD roles.
